About the workshop:
The history of superheroes has long been dominated by capitalist narratives that glorify masculinity, imperialism, and colonial narratives, particularly from U.S. points of view. But as writers from elsewhere increasingly make their voices heard, there is an opportunity to subvert this tool and turn the idea of superheroes against ruling powers.
Through writing exercises, reading analysis, and guided discussion, comics writer Yazan al-Saadi will lead this workshop delving into the concept of superheroes and what comics writers from around the world aim to explore with their super-powered characters.
Date:
This is a 2-hour online workshop on Zoom on Thursday November 14th from 4pm-6pmPST/7pm-9pm EST. The workshop is capped at 25 participants. Everyone who signs up will receive a Zoom link via email and then a recording of the workshop afterwards.
What you need:
• Writing supplies. This workshop will involve writing and sharing ideas, so have a pen or pencil on hand, or be prepared to type notes.
About the teacher:
Yazan al-Saadi is a Syrian-Canadian writer, researcher, critic, and comics zealot. He is a member of the comics collective Samandal and the writer of numerous fiction and nonfiction comics. Yazan is currently based in the alluring (yet callous) city of Beirut. He has seen too many airports and often dreams of electronic sheep. He has an aversion to genocidal regimes.
