Are you interested in comics but think you could never draw your own? Join the club! This extremely encouraging, low-stakes class starts with drawing blobs to help you face anxiety around drawing. Over six weeks, experienced stick-figure-drawer Ali Holmes will help you explore your creativity and express yourself through graphic narratives. Each of the six weeks will focus on a different medium artists use to create comics, including collage, pen-and-ink, colored pencils, and watercolor. Artists we’ll discuss include Lynda Barry, Nora Krug, and Mira Jacob.
Class dates:
This class runs for six weeks, from November 9 – December 14, on Saturdays from 10am-noonpmPST/1pm-3pm EST. This class meets online, via Zoom, and is capped at 25 participants. The class will be recorded and emailed to all participants weekly, if you need to miss a session.
What you need:
• Drawing supplies. You can draw on paper or digitally, whatever you prefer. You’re welcome to use whatever materials you have on hand, whether it’s colored pencils, watercolors, or ink pens.
About the teacher:
Ali Holmes, she/her, is an artist specializing in memoir comics, graphic nonfiction, and art education. I am both a practicing artist and an educator. My future goals include writing a graphic memoir and hopefully getting it published. I’m currently working on a shorter graphic nonfiction piece about how to start your own union and hope to publish it later this year in 2024. I believe art is a form of communication and want to use art to help you tell your stories and build community power. Let’s create something beautiful together!
