Excited to Love More: Moments from My Trans Pregnancy

Being pregnant is a journey—especially when you're transgender.
Four panel comic titled, No More Trans Comics. Panel 1: Will and Eduardo are riding bikes side by side. Will says, “I’m done making trans feelings comics. I just want to make comics about love and vegan food.” Eduardo replies, “Ok.” Panel 2: Narrative text says, “The next day…” Will is standing in a garden holding a phone to their ear. They say, “Hi, yes, I’d like to make an appointment to remove my IUD.” Panel 3: Will is kneeling and digging in the garden, still on the phone. They say, “Yes, Monday is great.” Panel 4. Will is lying down looking dismayed. The voice on the other end of the phone says, “So, if you have an IUD, you’re… female?”Four panel comic titled, Week 7 Cravings Panel 1: Will is holding a tall can labeled, “Jingles”. Will looks down into it sadly and says, “Salt + vinegar Pringles aren’t vegan. Knockoff Pringles are not the same.” Panel 2: Will is holding up a bag of pierogis, and says, “I know I bought these super expensive pierogis an hour ago but now I’m disgusted by the sight of them.” Panel 3: Will looks determined and says, “I need gingersnaps immediately.” Eduardo is in the background a little surprised. Panel 4: Eduardo is looking in the refrigerator and says, “Where did that entire container of raspberries go?” Will is walking away guiltily.Four panel comic titled, Going Wrong. Panel 1: Will is sitting at a table with a phone, notebook, pencil and computer. They say, “Ok, I found 3 potential OB/GYNS. They take our insurance and I’m getting some good vibes?” Panel 2: Narrative text says, “1. Profile mentions her wife.” A butch doctor says, “So great to meet you! Unfortunately this is my last week in Colorado.” Panel 3: Narrative text says, “2. Profile says she also does trans health.” A doctor gently says, “So… I’m a gynecologist. I don’t do obstetrics.” Will is putting their hand over their face. Panel 4: Narrative text says, “3. Profile uses ‘pregnant people’. A doctor on a chair says, “They/them? You’ll have to bear with me on that.” Will is small and sad, waving goodbye and walking away.Four panel comic titled, Going Right. Panel 1: Will is standing next to Eduardo who is at his computer. Will says, “Wow ok. Change of plans. I signed up for meetings with three midwife practices.” Eduardo says, “Cool!” Panel 2. Narrative text says, “1.” Will and Eduardo are sitting on a couch looking skeptical. A midwife stands in front of them saying, “Here’s our presentation! Mama, mama, woman, female, woman, mama.” Panel 3. Narrative text says, “2.” Will and a midwife are having tea. The midwife says, “We would be honored to work with you but we don’t take your insurance.” Will replies, “That’s ok, I don’t think we’re ready for a home birth.” Panel 4: Narrative text says, “3. Success!” Will and Eduardo are sitting on a couch and a midwife says, “So what are your hopes? What do you need?”Four panel comic titled, Goddess Panel 1: Will is sitting on the toilet reading on their phone. Narrative text says, “In your second trimester, you may look and feel like a goddess, with glowing skin and renewed energy. —The pregnancy website I check daily.” Panel 2: Will is reading a book without pants on. Narrative text says, “As your body changes, your center of balance changes as well. You may want to set aside your high heels. — The pregnancy book I read daily.” Panel 3. Will looks up from their book, wide eyed. Narrative text says, “You may look and feel like a gremlin. You may regularly find yourself eating vegan ice cream sandwiches for breakfast, wearing no pants. — Will Betke-Brunswick.” Panel 4. Will is in front of the freezer, wearing no pants and holding an ice cream sandwich. Will is grinning widely.Four panel comic titled, Pretzel Emergency. Panel 1: Will and Eduardo are sitting on the couch. Will says, “I need a soft pretzel! Right now!” Eduardo says, “It’s 11PM. You probably have to go to a straight bar.” Panel 2: Will and Eduardo both have looks of dread. Will says, “Will you come in with me?” Eduardo says, “No thanks.” Panel 3. In a bubble cloud indicating an imagined situation, Will approaches a door. Three men stand in front of a door and one says, “What does NASCAR stand for?” Another says, “Name three heterosexual musicians.” Panel 4: Will enters a bar and three men are cheering for basketball on the tv. Will asks the bartender, “Umm, hi. Can I please get a soft pretzel with no butter at all? To go?”Four panel comic titled, FTM. Panel 1: Will is holding their phone and says, “I haven’t felt it move and I’m past 20 weeks.” Eduardo says, “I think it’s ok.” Panel 2: Will is looking at their phone looking surprised. A speech bubble coming from the phone says, “FTM here, didn’t feel anything until 24 weeks.” Panel 3: Will looks even more surprised and reaches toward Eduardo. A speech bubble coming from the phone says, “FTM as well, Dr. said it might be the position of the placenta.” Panel 4: Eduardo reads the screen over Will’s shoulder and says, “First Time Mom.” Will looks disappointed.Four panel comic titled, What About the Straights Panel 1: Will and Eduardo are walking across a waiting room of heterosexual couples as a voice outside the panel calls, “Will and Eduardo?” Panel 2: A midwife sitting on a stool with a clipboard says, “So, are you planning to bodyfeed? Their legs are up on the wall and their pregnant belly is rising above the waterline. There are two palm trees on their belly. Narrative text says, “Like a desert island in the tub.” Panel 4: Will is standing and shrugging. Narrative text says, “Fine? They are smiling, and the baby looks a little surprised. There are stars in the background.
