The Way We See Danger

Moms, dads, and babies all think about danger differently.

A miniature Papin sits on the edge of a giant bed. There is a black spikey border looming around the whole image. Text: The bed is the edge of a cliff. And I hate every corner in the house. Every step she takes on her own is one step closer to my heart attack.

A small paw reaches down from the top of the page. From the bottom of the page, a larger paw reaches up towards the other. Text: With time, you learn to trust her more – you have to.

Taking up most of the page, with the top half of their face cut off, stands Papin. Papin has scratches on their face, arm, and shoulder, but stands calmly. Text: They will get back up, and dust themselves off. (If you let them)

At the top of the page, from behind, Papin is seen climbing over a wall, one leg still dangling down. Text: Stand tall, and will try again. (And you’ll be proud.)

The same bunny (Mom) stands in the foreground, holding a tray of food labeled BLW for a small yellow bunny (Papin). In the distance, an orange bunny (Dad) is seen making puree, he shouts out “she’ll choke!” Text: In Dad’s eyes, I seem to be just as carefree as the baby.

Two pieces of broccoli, two carrots, and a strawberry sit at the center of the page. Text: He teases me that I’m usually the more cautious one, but with the baby, I seem to have a surprisingly big heart. I’ve done my research and it’s safe.

Two bowls labeled ceramic, one glass mug with an arrow stating “hasn’t been broken yet”, and a plastic/silicone divided plate. Text: Instead of drawing limits around her and filling her world with “no”s and “you cant”. Bye!

The same mom bunny as before, stands behind a baby gate at the top of a set of stairs, her hand on her chin in thought. A small orange handrail is shown next to the descending stairs. Text: I want her to grow up believing: “If I’m willing to learn, I can do anything.” Should we install a handrail so she can climb it by herself? We should hold her hand!

Mom bunny, this time wearing a red shirt, holds a set of chopsticks while feeding a small yellow Papin in a green shirt. There is a large plate of red food in front of Mom, and a smaller plate of yellow food with red specks in front of Papin. Papin’s mouth is open, ready to eat a bite of food from Mom. Text: Within the bounds of basic safety, I remind myself to let her try. You sure? It’s spicy. It might hurt and make you cry… just a bit then.

The same setting and characters as the previous page are shown. However, now Mom has swaddled a crying Papin in her arms. Text: Sometimes a little scratch leaves the strongest lesson. I know… that’s what spicy feels like. Come here. Want some milk? It’ll help.
