The adventuring cartoonist who has penned comics while aboard wooden ships and river rafts will talk with Crucial published Shay Mirk about her process for making all sorts of wild comics. In this one-hour talk on the craft of comics, Lucy will talk about her approach to making a comic that weaves her personal grief into a historical story and about the epic graphic novel she’s been drawing for several years: Seacritters!

About Lucy Bellwood:
Lucy Bellwood is a professional Adventure Cartoonist based in Ojai, CA. Her documented expeditions include rafting trips through the Grand Canyon, cutting-edge oceanography in the Pacific, and a voyage aboard the last wooden whaling ship in the world. Her talks and essays explore the intersections of community, authenticity, and financial sustainability for creators. She is the author of Baggywrinkles: a Lubber’s Guide to Life at Sea, an educational memoir about her time working aboard tall ships, and 100 Demon Dialogues, a helpful guide to living with imposter syndrome. Her next graphic novel, Seacritters! The Hunt for the Jigamaree, with writer Kate Milford, comes out from Candlewick in March, 2027.
About the Artist Talk series:
In 2026, Crucial Comix is hosting a series of talks by cartoonists about their art-making process. These one-hour sessions are open to the public and all sliding scale. Artists previously featured in the series were Lee Lai, Thi Bui, Mattie Lubchansky, and Nate Powell.
To make them affordable, all of our classes and workshops are offered at a sliding scale cost.
Supporter - This payment level pitches in a little extra toward the teacher’s income and helps pay artists to create new comics at Crucial. Thanks for your support!
Standard - This is the basic rate for the class, which covers our costs.
Discount - We want people of all income levels in our classes, so choose this rate if you paying the standard rate is a stretch for you.
We set aside three spots in each class to be offered for free to people who would find it a hardship to pay the discount rate for any reason. These free spots are first-come, first-serve.
