Commit to a weekly drawing practice so you’ll have a sketchbook that feels genuinely useful and fun.
About the class:
In this four-week class, we’ll build a sketchbook practice that actually sticks. Each week we’ll explore the many uses of a working sketchbook — from drawing from reference to character design and creative writing — while finding what works for you personally. By the end, you’ll have a sketchbook that feels genuinely useful and the tools to keep it going long after class is over.
Date:
This is a four-week, online class that meets up on Wednesdays, August 5th – August 26th, 4pm-6pm PST/7-9pm EST. The class is capped at 25 participants. Everyone who signs up will receive a Zoom link via email and then a recording of the workshop afterwards.
The price for this class is lower than Crucial’s other classes to keep it affordable and accessible.
What you need:
• Drawing supplies and a sketchbook. You’re welcome to use whatever materials you have on hand, whether it’s colored pencils, watercolors, or ink pens.
About the teacher:
Anna Sellheim was born in Washington, D.C. but currently lives and works in Baltimore, MD. She earned her MFA in comics from the Center for Cartoon Studies in 2016. Sellheim’s work primarily deals with health, trauma, and the healing power of art and has been published by the Nib, Oni Press and Seven Days (Vermont’s Alternative Weekly Newspaper). She has also contributed to a number of anthologies, most notably Comics For Choice, an anthology of nonfiction comics about abortion that raised over $30,000 for the National Network Abortion Fund. Sellheim recently completed three years of being the Community Arts Collaborative Artist In Residence at the Refugee Youth Program (RYP), where she taught art and comics to refugee youth ages 5-21 throughout Baltimore City. She focused on guiding her students into creating their own healing art practices, while also using comics as an opportunity to solidify their English skills. One project of note, the RYP Zine, is an award-winning anthology created by her refugee students at Patterson High School. The sales of the initial print run raised over $1000 for the program. Anna Sellheim also guest- curated Infinite Possibilities: Art & Hope, an art show between Creative Alliance and RYP. She was a Sequential Artist Workshop (SAW) Teaching Fellow in 2025, and is now a teaching artist, teaching classes and workshops at SAW, the Baltimore Enoch Pratt Library System, Small Press Expo, and other locations.
To make them affordable, all of our classes and workshops are offered at a sliding scale cost.

Discount - We want people of all income levels in our classes, so choose this rate if you paying the standard rate is a stretch for you.
We set aside three spots in each class to be offered for free to people who would find it a hardship to pay the discount rate for any reason. These free spots are first-come, first-serve.
