Learn color theory and tricks of the trade for handling color in comics in this five-week class that begins Monday, September 28.
Getting the right colors is hard with millions of options to choose from. Join teachers Xenon Honchar, a professional comics colorist, and Ali Holmes, a comics editor and teacher, in this five-week class exploring practical ways that comics artists use color to tell stories. Participants will be encouraged to work with whatever materials they want to draw with specific days built around pen and ink, colored pencils, and watercolor. We will learn about color schemes, comics tricks-of-the-trade like spot color, and discuss color from an accessibility perspective so that your future comics can be read by anyone!
Expect to experiment with color, make some art you love, and collaborate with peers as we build knowledge of how comics work from a color perspective together.
This class is for anyone who’s ever thought, “I’ll just add one more, that’s okay right?” Focused on novice colorists, this class is all about getting better at using color in your work when you don’t quite know how to level up your skills. We will analyze the coloring work of comics artists including Art Spiegelman, Craig Thompson, Tillie Walden, Mike Curato, Jillian Tamaki, Thi Bui, Malaka Gharib, Denise Dorrance, Rob Kirby, Trung Le Nguyen, and Lauren Redniss.

This five-week online class will be on Mondays, September 28th-October 26 from 4-6pm PST / 7-9pm EST. The class will be recorded and shared with everyone who registers.
About the teachers:
Xenia Honchar is a comic colorist, editor, and illustrator. They have worked on properties such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sleepy Hollow, Event Horizons, 30 Days of Night and more! She is currently a resident for Pennsylvania College of Art and design encouraging current students and alumni to build and make comics about community. They are proudly from New Jersey and will one day give up art all together to morph into the onion pieces on an egg everything bagel. Until then she will excitedly be working with amazing creatives to make comics, cooking for her friends and living with their girlfriend and 2 cats in Lancaster, PA.
Ali Holmes is an artist specializing in memoir comics, graphic nonfiction, and art education. I am both a practicing artist and an educator. My future goals include writing a graphic memoir and hopefully getting it published. I’m currently working on a shorter graphic nonfiction piece about how to start your own union and hope to publish it later this year in 2024. I believe art is a form of communication and want to use art to help you tell your stories and build community power. Let’s create something beautiful together!
