Gibby

A small frog brought joy into my life.
Panel 1: $55 dollars Panel 2: Caption: “There used to be a day when I was alone.” Sad GG, labeled “me circa 2019”) Panel 3: Caption: “No doubt, something was missing in my life. I just didn’t know what.” Close-up of a Gibby-shaped hole in GG’s heart. Panel 4: Caption: “A traveling pet market had come to my town.” Billboard for “Repticon.” Panel 5: Caption: “The market was very busy.” GG gasps at the fish and snakes. Panel 6: “And full of many possible friends, but none seemed to fit…” Fish, snakes, and other reptiles don’t fit in GG’s heart.
Panel 1-3: “Then, our eyes met.” GG locks eyes with Gibby. Gibby smiles back. Panel 4: “They kept him in a tiny little plastic cup.” Little Gibby with a sales price tag, marked down to $55. Panel 5-6: “He would fit so much better in a heart” GG puts Gibby in their heart.
Panel 1: “Tuesday” Gibby basking in a puddle amidst leaves. Panel 2: “Today it is Tuesday.” Gibby and GG sit together on the floor Panel 3: Rain comes down outside. Panel 4: GG: “I think it’s raining.” Panel 5: GG thinks of Gibby outside, huddled under a leaf. Panel 6: GG: “Yup, rain.”
Panel 1: “There are many things I want Gibby to experience.” GG spritzes Gibby with a spray bottle. Panel 2: Gibby drips. Panel 3: “But I know he’s most comfortable in his enclosure.” GG: “Gibby, it’s your birthday!” Gibby is surrounded by soft gifts, looking uncertain. Panel 4: GG: “Ready, set, go!” Gibby rides a toy skateboard, looking uncertain. Panel 5: Gibby leaps off the bed. GG: “Gibby, no!” Panel 6: Back in the present, GG and Gibby on the floor together. “After all, it is a Tuesday.”
Panel 1: “Toot Scoots” Panel 2: “Pacman frogs are subterranean frogs—meaning they spend most of their time underground.” Panel 3: “For Gibby, this usually means burrowing with only his eyes poking out of the dirt.” Panel 4: “In the wild, this is their method of hunting.” Arrow pointing to Gibby: “Feels even the tiniest vibrations of a bug from below the surface. The expert hunter captures its prey.” Panel 5: “In captivity, it usually means I have to scoop Gibby out so he eats some food.” Label: “Food on a string.” GG: “Come on, it’s right there.” Panel 6: “It’s funny watching him burrow back down.”
Panel 1: “He scoots his butt back and forth to move away dirt to make his burrow.” Panel 2: “Sometimes he burrows so deep I can’t see him at all.” Panel 3: “He keeps going.” Panel 4: Gibby reaches the bottom of his world. Panel 5: “His wet little but squeaks against the glass at the bottom of his terrarium” Panel 6: Squeaky squeak squeak. GG yells, “Gibby!”
Panel 1: “Big moves” Gibby wearing socks. Panel 2: GG: “Hey bud I’m going sledding, don’t move a muscle.” Panel 3: Gibby sits still while the snow melts. Panel 4: Gibby sits still. GG walks by with confetti and a shirt reading “Hello 2026.” Panel 5: Gibby sits still while rain pours down outside. Panel 6: GG: “Doin taxes. Don’t need your help.” Gibby sits still.
Panel 1: Gibby sits still. Panel 2: GG tapes a repair over their cracked window. Gibby sits still. Panel 3: The window has been replaced. Gibby sits still. Panel 4: GG: “Goin to the cookout. Stay cool.” Gibby sits still. Panel 5: GG: “Hey bud I’m goin swim—oh my god…” Gibby has moved eight inches to the left. Panel 6: “Sometimes Gibby moves” GG takes several photos of Gibby.
Panel 1: “Friend-shaped” Panel 2: “Gibby burrows” Panel 3: “When I look for Gibby, I look for circles.” Label: “Maybe a previous burrow.” Label: “Current burrow.” Panel 4: “His “pond” is circle-shaped” Panel 5: “And so is he” Birds-eye-view of the very circular Gibby. Panel 6: “But, Gibby can be more than circle-shaped.” Gibby sploots over some rocks in his enclosure.
Panel 1: “In fact, he is very adaptive.” Gibby in a bowl, box, cup. Panel 2: “Frogs breathe using cutaneous respiration—meaning through their skin” Panel 3: “So while Gibby might adapt to his environment, it might not adapt to Gibby. Frogs are bioindicators. They are the first to go when an environment deteriorates.” Panel 4: “Our waste and oils from our hands are harmful to frogs. Be nice to the land, and wear gloves on your hands when handling frogs.” Panel 5: “If you adapt to frogs,” GG holds Gibby in gloved hands. Panel 6: “Frogs will adapt to you.” Gibby grins, comfortable in GG’s fingers.
Panel 1: Spring Panel 2: “Spring is here. I told you I’d take you out as soon as it was possible.” Panel 3: Gibby in his carrying enclosure. Panel 4: “Today’s the day.” GG releases Gibby at the edge of a river. Panel 5: GG sticks their feet in the water. Gibby sits and smiles. Panel 6: “Hey lil bud, can I be honest?”
Panel 1: “I’ve been avoiding this. The thought of a leisurely activity is easy for me to put off.” Panel 2: “As if spring days are common. As if I have unlimited time with you.” Panel 3: “You’re so pure. I feel disappointed in these assumptions—in myself when I face you.” Panel 4. “I’m sorry.” Panel 5: Gibby smiles contentedly. Panel 6: “I love you.”
Panel 1: “Mama nature!” Panel 2: POV of GG wiping their feet off on the doormat as they unlock the front door. Panel 3: “Gibby! I’m home!” Panel 4: “Aw man, sorry bud. It’s too late for your light to be on still.” Panel 5: Gibby looks up into the light. Panel 6: “The sun’s down outside. Sun off, bulb off.”
Panel 1: Gibby looks at GG. Panel 2: GG looks at Gibby. Panel 3: “I try my best to be mama nature for you. I wonder if you’re upset with the distance I’ve taken you from her.” GG being the sun, the earth, and the rain all at once. Panel 4: “Your life expectancy triples in captivity. I wonder if mine quadruples.” Panel 5: GG’s tidy apartment is also an enclosure. Panel 6: GG’s apartment from the outside, lit up in the dark night.

About the authors Gibby Christensen: Superstar Gibby Christensen is a South American horned frog (more commonly known as Pacman frogs). Gibby enjoys dark warm corners, dirt, and the company of a friend. Gibby has been friends with Citizen since 2019. Citizen Christensen: Through comics, illustration, sculpture, and video, multimedia artist Citizen Christensen has been able to tell stories picked up from homes throughout the country. Citizen makes comics on many things, but Gibby is a favorite subject.
