Let’s get magical! This workshop delves into using magical realism to enhance autobiographical comics.
About the workshop:
Sometimes the emotional truth of a story or experience can feel too monumental to communicate through realism. In this workshop, artist Sanika Phawde will have participants look at the work of Tillie Walden, Liana Finck, Anand Shenoy, Fumio Obata and Kruttika Susarla, to see how these artists use elements of magical realism and surrealism in their stories. We will see how these tools influence our experience of space and time in comics, and how we can learn from them and make magical realism comics of our own.
Date:
This is a 2-hour online workshop on Thursday, June 4th from 4pm-6pm PST / 7pm-9pm EST. The workshop is capped at 25 participants. Everyone who signs up will receive a Zoom link via email and then a recording of the workshop afterwards.
What you need:
• Drawing supplies. You can draw on paper or digitally, whatever you prefer. You’re welcome to use whatever materials you have on hand, whether it’s colored pencils, watercolors, or ink pens.
