Raising (and Drawing) Our Kids Through Chaos

Price range: $150.00 through $300.00

Learn the fundamentals of comics creation while drawing our family stories.

Caregivers of young children are invited to come to attend this class to learn the fundamentals of comics creation while drawing our family stories. This class is designed for us to reflect, release, and illustrate our solidarity with families across the world who are oppressed and being silenced for speaking the truth about ongoing forms of colonialism like multiple genocides, mass deportations, censorship in education, lack of access to healthcare to name a few. No comics making experience is required to enroll in this class.

Each week will involve discussion, drawing, and writing from prompts offered by teacher Breena Nuñez.

About the teacher:

Breena Nuñez is a Bay Area bred cartoonist and part-time adjunct professor teaching Race & Comics at California College of the Arts. She creates diary comics that often explore themes surrounding the awkwardness of racism, being a queer Afrodescendiente from the Bay Area, and understanding what it means to be Central American from the US. Their hope as a cartoonist & educator is to help BIPOC folks give themselves permission to express their personal stories through the language of comics. Nowadays they are sharing laughs with their baby over a cup o’ joe brewed by her spouse (Lawrence Lindell), and writing as many stories for future comic strips about motherhood in our current time and continuing to work on their graphic memoir, Morena.

To make them affordable, all of our classes and workshops are offered at a sliding scale cost.

Supporter - This payment level pitches in a little extra toward the teacher’s income and helps pay artists to create new comics at Crucial. Thanks for your support!
Standard - This is the basic rate for the class, which covers our costs.
Discount - We want people of all income levels in our classes, so choose this rate if you paying the standard rate is a stretch for you.

We set aside three spots in each class to be offered for free to people who would find it a hardship to pay the discount rate for any reason. These free spots are first-come, first-serve. If you would like to take a class for free, please send us a short email about yourself, what class you would like to take, and why. If a free spot is still available, we’ll send you a discount code to register for free! Email: editors@crucialcomix.com
